This may be a dumb question, but I can not deterimine which AR15's are legal for me to buy in this state (Massachusetts). I have read about pre-ban, post-ban and I simply confused. I am lefty so I am really trying to determine if I can buy a Stag Arms or now? Any help would be appreciated.

To the best of my knowlege you can buy a Stag. If you want a complete gun..it must be post ban. Feel free to contact Stag directly. If you buy a preban lower...you can buy a no band upper for it. Simple as that. Good luck, sorry you live in MA.

Bushmaster still makes guns in the "ban" configuration, as well as others. Basically it can't have a flash hider, bayonet lug, or collapsible stock. And you need to meet your local police chief's, and states demands to get a license first.

Check out this page for AR's still legal to buy in Mass. You may want to call them and see if they can get a Stag Arms AR in for you.

You can buy anything that you could have bought during the Federal Ban. Any of the "evil features" made after 9/13/94 are forever prohibited in MA!

Ditto on hi-cap mags. Made before 9/13/94 is OK, newer is a Felony.

Having a pre-ban lower is NOT ENOUGH. Like the old Fed Ban, that lower HAS TO HAVE BEEN BUILT INTO A COMPLETE GUN or KIT prior to 9/13/94 to qualify as "pre-ban". Just lowers don't cut it.

Yes, you need a LTC in order to possess either hi-cap mags or hi-cap rifles/shotguns in MA.

If you want a ton more info on MA laws, go to the forum in my sig line and check out the Gun Laws forum. First read the Stickies and then use Advanced Search on key words (4 characters minimum).

I grew up in Andover, I remember having to have my FID card to purchase long guns. I still love coming home to visit but no way I could live there these days, to many restricted toys!

I believe in Andover you actually need a note from a physician stating you're not insane, in order to get a permit these days. I'm not kidding.

Many of the AR makers offer "post ban" variants of their rifles so that they can sell them in places like MA.

I am a lefty, too, and Stag does indeed offer their ARs in MA legal configurations. I just picked one up not long ago, and it is nicely made and shoots very well.

IIRC, that provision of the CLEO of Andover's licensing requirements died a quick death, since no doctor or mental health professional wanted the legal liabilty involved in giving somebody a gun license based on their judgement of his or her mental condition...

If it's new, and it's got a pinned stock, muzzle brake (welded/pinned) and ground-off bayo lugs, it's for sale in MA. Lots of evil guns here, incl. many pre-ban guns and mags.

A visit to a local gun shop told me that the two biggest sellers now in MA are pistols and EBRs. Hunting's dead in MA, at least from the POV of the gun shops in my area, formerly a bastion of the Fudds.

I hope you are right, but I have NOT heard that they dropped that requirement. I have a call in now to the Exec. Director of GOAL right now and will try to remember to ask him today or tomorrow (I'll be working with him at the gun show).

I have a good friend and NRA Instructor who had to get that letter for a renewal in a Southeast MA community! My doctor has a pre-made form for that purpose.
