Glock 17 and 19..... whats the difference?

I've been thinking about getting a Glock in 9mm for some time now, for personal protection and as a target pistol.

Now, I know that a Glock 19 is the more compact version of the 17, but by how much? enough to make it uncomfortable in my hand??

Anyone have a side-by-side pic of these two?

Any recommendations?

I have a 19 but not a 17. The 19's a good size in my opinion. I can get all my fingers on the grip. Personally I think for CCW the 19 is a better gun, though the 17 is fine.

Hmm, there doesnt look like much difference to me, but the magazine on the 19 fits more flush with itself, i wonder if a g17 mag would fit in it? lol.

Well, I don't see why i couldn't use a 17 to conceal unless it weighs a ton more. I think i'll go with whatever i can get a better deal on $$$.

I have both but I tend to like the G19 a little more because of the concealability. I have carried my G17 but only when I'm wearing a coat to help hide it. My G19 gets carried 99.9% of the time, even in the summer with shorts and a t-shirt. However, the G17 is what I take with me to classes. As far as weight goes, I've never noticed much of a difference. Yes you can run G17 mags in the 19 but not the other way around. FWIW they both ran me $484 so cost wasn't an issue.

If you are going to carry it concealed I'd say get the G19 first. Then pick up a G17 later on...I think everyone should own a G17

I'll take some side-by-side pictures this evening.

The G17, G19 and G26 are all the same basic size. The olny difference is the G19 and G26 are shorter in the slide and grip.

G17 and a G32(same size as a G19)

The G19 is too small for my use. It might be okay for guys with smaller hands, but if you have good-sized hands it might be too small for you too. The G17 fits my hands better than the G19 even though there isn’t much of a size difference. In my opinion the size of the G17 vs. G19 has to do more with frame to hand fit than concealing because the pistols are almost the same size.

The G26, surprisingly, is okay for me because I can just throw the fifth finger under the grip. I find the G20/21 frame the most comfortable frame size.

I knew a guy with really big hands who packed, and concealed a Desert Eagle .50AE. He wasn’t fooling around or show boating, the .50AE was comfortable to him and he carried it. A chief’s special for the land of giants.

the G-19 is about 1/2 in. shorter in length and height
you still get a 4in bbl

slide and grip width are the same--also, the G-19 can use G-17 17rnd mags but the G-17 can not use G-19 mags

if you plan on CCW this, i would opt for the G-19; if its just for range, HD i would get the either

From what i've seen and read I think i'll get the G19, and look into a threaded barrel in the future. Lol..

To be honest, I've never really gotten into glocks, so this will be my first one.

On second thought, I don't see a true difference, as i have always liked the G17....

If i can find a good deal on a 19, ill get it..... But if i find a good deal on a 17, i'll get it.

I'm not a real fan of the G26 as it seems incredibly small to me, which is good for concealment but i also want an intimidating weapon, and a Desert Eagle seems to big to carry for my little body

if you want an intimidaing weapon, get a .45acp--1911 or G-21/30

compare the bore size/cartrige size; the .45acp dwarfs the 9mm, eating it alive

look directly at the muzzle (BGs' view) and i think that the .45acp looks a hell of a lot more intimadating

Ah damn, you went and put a new twist on things eh?

I do like .45's.... mostly because of their power and the fact that they are already subsonic.

How many rounds can a flush 21 or 30 hold? That would probably be the deciding factor for me, as more capacity is better for me, seeing as how the first shot in self defense will shock the hell out of them, and continue to shoot them with 9mm would kill them, but a well placed shot of either would still do well, a .45 being more powerful.....

With all due respect, your priorities are out of whack for self defense (which I assume you desire, based on the concealability requirement). You're kidding yourself if you think a BG is going to care about the muzzle-on difference between a G17 and a G26. I know several people with snub-nosed .38s, subcompact 9mms, etc who have stopped confrontations with those guns. If somebody is dumb/stoned enough to continue an assault after seeing any gun, they deserve to get shot.

It doesn't matter to me if the crinimal is shocked. If I have to pull my CCW it's for a reason and at that point I only care about him being dead. If you're worried about shocking the BG I fear things may end badly for you

When it comes to concealing a handgun, a small difference in grip frame and slide length can make more of a difference than you'd think. I think the G19 is a great CCW gun and a great range gun. It's the smallest gun that I know of that you can get all of your fingers on, plus it holds 15 rounds. The G17 is concealable and makes a good range gun, too, but the only advantage it has are a longer sight radius and 2 more rounds in the magazine. Of course, the 17 round (and even 33 round) mags fit just right in a G19, too.

a flush G-21 can hold 13+1
i would get the G-30, 10+1 w/ G-21 mags as backups

if you want more stoping power and large cap, load a G-19 w/ +p bullets or go w/ a .357sig glock, G32 would fit the bill w/ 13 rnds

I don't really care about how "scary" my gun is the the BG, that is why i jokingly said "Desert Eagle"......

A glock 17 or 19 would probably be more along the line of what i want.... Perhaps with a belt holster that goes inside the pants or something similar...

Pulling a weapon out to intimidate someone isn’t just stupid, but here it is illegal too.

Perhaps, it is my childish sense that if my friends see my stuff and they think it is cool, it makes me feel better?

The need to make an AR-15 conversion that takes glock mags.

HotRod9mm,

What kind of Mag release is that on your G32

for intimidation, take some emery paper and sand the muzzle of the barrel down to the bare metal. The silver hole on black really catches the eye.
