Light Mount without a rail system?

Is it possible to have a simple mount for a light with hand guards, or would I be better off going with a 7" rail and mounting on the side?

I'm planning another build that I'll have a rail on, but I'd rather keep this one pretty simple with the basic m4 style hand guards.

Any recommendations on mounts or combo light/mount setups?

Try the Elzetta Mount:

Here are photos of an Elzetta mount with a SureFire G2 on my KISS rifle.

then use any mount, like the larue or similar?

I saw a vltor picture somewhere, but couldn't find a close up. how is that setup?

The short rails that attach to the handguards work fine. Fitted to attach thru the vent holes securely. AAC used to (might still) make em. There are others. Check Brownell's. Also as was described there are mounts that attach to the front sight base- either throught the base or attached to the bayo lug. YHM has a bunch of stuff for attachment options so check their web site for a possible solution. The mounts options with bigger names like Vltor, Surefire, DD, etc. are all assoc. usu. with some form of rail attach. (picatinny or weaver) but the one with the image above looks like a viable solution. If that rail attachment is separate from the Elzetta mount you could mount it then with any type of rail mount for flashlights. I'm pretty sure you can find something similar that is sold as an individual piece from one of the manufacturers if not from them.

I found that you can order from UTG a set of metal rails that mount to the holes on your standard handguards that work real well, I think I paid $15.00 for a set of two with all the mounting screws. I did purchase a UTG Quad rail kit for $65.00 that is actually rock solid once mounted so you actually have a few directions. Don't care for the UTG scopes but the all metal mounts / rails are great and not overpriced. May want to look into this

I just ordered one of these. I think it might be the good way to go...
