Well the title pretty much says it all.Im a newbie and this is my first AR, although i have lots of experience with my other weapons, i am just learning the ar basics.I want a decent scope with maybe 4-9x adjustment and that is relatively rugged and reliable.Any direction would be greatly appreciated as there are soooo many different ones out there

$200 isn't going to get you much IMO. Maybe a VX-I from Leupold? Most mounts are going to cost 1/2 of that.

ok thanx for the input.i suppose based on the minimal and negative feedback that i could spend some more money.i am looking to stay within a certain budget but this is not really an area to cheap out in and i want somethin decent.so lets say forget the $200 price range and lets just say....what is the best budget minded scope?under $500.thats the absolute most i could reason parting with and still being somewhat within a "budget".once again thanx everyone i am just trying to find my way in this new world of mine without going bankrupt ans still being able to build my expedition toyota tacoma as well.i am soooooo glad to be here tho

Check out the Nikon Prostaff in 3-9..... I have many high dollar scopes and they are worth the money, but if you are looking for budget it is damn hard to beat this glass... If you shop wise they can be had for fewer than 100.00. In the event you have issues with it (which I doubt you will) Nikon is great with their customer service, warranty, repair....

Tagged my first coyote of the year with my house gun yesterday morning. 125 yds AR w/ Prostaff 3-9

Burris, Redfield (now Leupold) are others to consider.

I really have issues with the Bushnell. They make some good products, but I'm disappointed how they support them. Most Outdoor Sportsmen company back their products with passion... Bushnell really has a too fucking bad attitude.... I've seen it time and time again during my Outfitter time at the World Foremost Outfitter... (Very Insightful)

The High Rings are a must. I'm a huge fan of the Burris Xtreme rings or the New AR Tactical Mount... Optics planet has these and they match prices and have free shipping. Work the system... I got my butler creek covers from Optics Planet for dirt cheap and free shipping by finding a better price elsewhere and then having them match the price....

Go with a Prostaff 3-9, some 1" Burris Xtreme Rings and some butler creek covers... Shop frugally and you'll be under 150.00 and won't have regret. I got high dollar glass (thanks to my employee discount) but I have 6 Prostaffs... BDC Reticle? Only if you get it for free... Not necessary in my opinion. The Nikoplex is just fine for the .223.

Opinions are free – that’s mine…

I've heard terrible things about c/s from nearly every one of the big name optics makers. The only company that I haven't heard anything but praise for is Vortex. Best way to avoid bad c/s is to buy a good enough product that you don't have to worry about the warranty. When dealing with the higher end lines, most companies have a pretty good reputation from what I've seen.

That changes things up a bit. If you're using an A-1 or A-2 upper and try to mount a scope your cheek weld is going to become a chin weld. Would you consider getting a flat top upper? Makes optic mounting a lot easier and opens up your options quite a bit.

I agree... Like I said, I got good glass and its worth the money....

Just the view from my vantage (whatever that is worth). Working in the industry for a little while, you gain some exposure... Not an expert, by any means... Just what I saw...

I personally love seeing AR's topped with a Nightforce, but that wasn't the question.... :-)

Mounting a magnified optic to the CH is about the most asinine thing you can do to a AR IMO. You will not even have a cheek weld. You will have a chin weld. If your gonna go optics ditch the CH, you'll thank me later.

Yeah if you're gonna keep the carry handle, then go for a non-magnifying red dot. You'll have no cheek weld and accuracy will suffer.

They make (made?) carry handle mounts so they sit down lower to cowitness, or mount on a forward rail if you have that. That way you'll use that particular configuration (A1 or A2) for much better effect.

thanx for the well rounded advice everyone!i fully understand the want for a good cheek weld, and do not want to be "that guy" or suffer from inaccuracy as i want to be as accurate as possible and dont want to get a new upper to replace the one with the carry handle either.so i am now highly considering a red dot or similar.sooooo what do you guys recommend for a carry handle ar optic?God i hate being in the dark, but u cant know everything and have experieneced everything so here i am.thanx for the honest opinions guys and shedding some light on some subjects for me

There are A2 cheek rests out there for sale, if you want to use your CH, but I have no experience with them so I cannot recommend one. Without it, you will have to lift your head off of the stock. That might get you to 150yds, but I wouldn't think much further. As stated, you might as well put a RDS on your CH and leave it at that. If you want to try a rest, here is an example:

even with an RDS ill still not have a proper cheek weld tho correct so in all actuality i shouldnt get a scope at all unless i change my upper?
NickOfTime  [Member]
1/17/2011 9:27:46 PM
Depends...what kind of distances are you looking for? Consider the RDS to be about the same as your iron sights. I am not sure if they cowitness on a HC. That might be a topic for another thread.

The two best scopes optically under $200 are the Bushnell 4200 3-9x40 and Nikon Monarch UCC 3-9x40, both of which have been selling recently for $199.

NIckOfTime.....i am looking for as far of an accurate visible yardage as possible, however its looking like i really either need to change my upper or just stick with my iron sights?would upgrading my irons atleast be worthwhile(obviously this wont change my visible distance or anything but...)....?thanx again.glad i didnt spend anything on optics before consulting you guys, however im starting to feel disappointed in this brand new gun that hasnt even been fired yet(lots of work and a death in the fam in the week ive owned it) just do to the fact that i really wanted to get good scope and be able to hit/ see the distances these guns are capable of...SOB shoulda researched more before purchasing.now what should i do?i really cant afford a ne upper at this point

A new upper isn't that much. Spike's Tactical has one for $115. Get that and sell your old upper on the EE.

I am in love with my Center Point Power class 3-12x scope, it came to $140 shipped after a 15% off coupon from Dick's Sporting goods.

The Spike's might mate up OK. It depends on Oly's specs and how close they wanted to get to standards that week. I pulled out an old Oly lower I have and put my Stag upper on it. It fit, but it was a super tight fit at the rear. Got the same result from my son's Stag upper. If you go this route and find you have to remove some material to get the right fit, I would take it off the Oly rather than a high quality upper. When you get this done, you'll be ready for a wide range of optics and have a chronic and potentially expensive case of EBR disease.

ETA for clarity

To get a good quality A3 upper- contact Zac at LAR... They have their Grizzly blem for $48.00. Their quality control is simply INSANE.... You will be hard pressed to find why they call them blems. I took the word of my fellow ARFCOMers and ordered three. I'll order more - check out the thread - http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=515809

So, for $48.00 you can get a stripped A3 upper..... I like the A3 because of the options... You'll notice that most of the builds are A3 - there is a reason for that.

That being said - isn't that the beauty of Black? You can build what YOU WANT..... Of course, you can never have just one... Both A2 and A3's are mandatory! If not now - your next

Enjoy...

P.S. - MIDWAY USA has their ProStaff 3-9 for under 100.00.... Just saying..

You dont HAVE to be disappointed. You could just get a cheek rest and keep the CH. Then you just have to decide what kind of sight you want and power. Or, get a second upper. The AR really is a modular system. You could have a scoped upper, one with the CH + irons, a hunting upper in 7.62x39, 6.8, 6.5, some crazy wildcat that we havent heard of yet....you get the idea

You might want to go to the Build It Yourself fourm and ask about any issues between Spikes and Oly. You could always email Spikes and see what they recommend. Google Spikes Tactical and you should find their website...
