653 build predicament... What flash hider? (SBR's not allowed in IL)

I've everything for my 653 build, but I'm at a standstill on what to do with the flash hider.

I bought two of Jeremy's Colt lightweight 14.5" barrels, but need to do a permanent flash hider for obvious reasons (I'm in Illinois). I'm good at doing pin-and-welds, I've done several, but the A1 flash hider is obviously not long enough to bring a 14.5" barrel to 16" OAL. And, an SDI A2 just seems a bit sacriledge to me.

So, what to do? I can lopp off the wrench flats of an A2 hider and weld it up to an A1 to make a visually satisfying extended A1, or I can bite the bullet and use the SDI extended A2... Or I could.... Damn, I just don't know what the hell to do, LOL.

Sorry for being so picky, but does anyone know of any other options or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

A1 + spacer. I'm having 45Bravo do that for me on the same barrel. Couldn't stand to go with the extended A2. It really doesn't look that bad - try to locate some pictures - I think others have called it a double-nut mod. Honestly, if no SBRs are allowed and you want a 653 clone, it's your best option.

I agree with Shade - I talked to 45Bravo about possibly doing that, but I also have the SDI extended A2 - it looks good, but it's still an A2. 45Bravo also has a cool three prong FH of his own design - there is a pic of it in his ad in the EE. It wouldn't be 'correct' for any serious retro build, but I'm thiinking of going that route because I think it would look cool and I want to keep the SDI (hard to find) for a future M4 barrel.

Can we get 45Bravo to make some A1 extended bird cage flash hiders?

Im going to be in need of one soon to.

Drop a lockwasher on there and thread the flash hider on. should be about right. Mine was, then get it pinned.

Thanks Shade. I believe that double-nut modification is like the one pictured in the General Discussion-IDF clone/KISS carbine picture thread?

I guess if that's my only option I'll need to go that route.

I was just thinking though... Too bad nobody made a parkerized threaded collar that was the same diameter of the barrel that you could put on before the split washer (it would act as a small barrel extension of sorts). Then we could slide on our split washer and then our A1 flash hider, pin-and-weld the flash hider...and voilĂ !

I guess I can try my hand at backyard machining by cutting off the wrench flat portion of an A2 hider, turn it down to barrel diameter and have someone park it for me? Hmmm...

Steve, I think that's the one. 45Bravo is actually making some sort of spacer for me - not cutting off the bottom of a flash hider - and I have no idea what that's going to look like. He should be getting my barrel tomorrow, but no idea when he'll be able to get to mine.

Kurt's Kustom will make an extended A1 - his "Milspec" - you just have to ask for A1 instead of A2

I cut a .2 spacer on the lathe the exact diameter of the "step" on the end of the barrel. Parked it and installed a pinned and welded A1.

I took an A1 flash hider and cut the back nut off at the back of the next section and used a standard split ring lock washer then the piece I cut off and then the A1 flash hider itself. Pinned and welded the flashider on and viola! It comes out just at 16 1/4" or 16 1/8" depending on your cut and how hard you torque it down. It's legal and looks better than the extended ones in my opinion plus it is cheaper as well. Whats an SDI extended flashider these days...$45.00 ...ouch!!!!

Also, what does your blind pin & weld job look like? Is that it in your pic? If so, I can't tell.

Yep, that's it but you can barely see it in sunlight. I park it after it is pinned and welded. The key is to wrap the barrel and washer with electrical tape from the flash hider down and blast with glass beads. Then you wash, degrease, and re-tape just under the spacer and place it in the park tank with the barrel extension side resting outside the tank. I use ER70S2 tig rod for the pin. Not only does it weld nicely the parked color matches perfectly. I glass bead the rod first to remove any copper coating which will show in the weld after parking. I dress the weld with a small file to after welding and before glass beading. I'll be glad to make some more spacers when I get the time and let you guys know. I've done some M4s like this and posted pics and this is the first time anyone has commented!

KJB, can I buy one or two from you also?

When/if you get time to make some more, that is.

Just get out the dremel and make some more cuts on the bottom to match.

You start making those to sell KJB, let me know because I need one myself. I will just budget it in somehow. A damn flashhider spacer is a major purchase when you're laid off...
