2nd AR build-- to FDE or not to FDE

My first AR is almost a KISS rifle in basic black. 16" flattop middy with FSB, Magpul CTR, MOE+ grip, Magpul handguards.

I am wanting to build a 2nd rifle with NV capability. At the same time, I was thinking of doing something different this time and getting the furniture in FDE. This would be more of a high end rifle with a free float rail, no FSB, Geissele SSA trigger, new Magpul STR stock and some Troy folding BUIS.

Only thing I'm wondering, is FDE a dumb idea for a gun that will be more of a night rifle? Seems to me more like night = black, but I really have no idea how FDE performs in low/no light conditions. I was thinking of getting a PVS-14 (the TNVC ones are offered in FDE or Multicam which looks pretty nice), surefire white/IR light and eventually a DBAL-A2 in tan as well, but not sure I'm ready to commit to that color choice for such expensive items :/

I suppose I could retrofit the first rifle to FDE and do the new one in all black... but I already have the FDE STR stock I got a great deal on, plus I just think black looks better for a KISS rifle.

FDE.

There was a thread somewhere (can't find it) of black rifles vs others as viewed through NVD's and the black ones stood out the most.

I would do FDE. I did one that way and LOVE how it turned out. Since you are going for stealth, be sure to pick a flash hider that works well.

Here is my REECE in FDE/AlumahydeII earth brown

Find your way over to the M4A1 SOCOM Block II thread. You'll quickly crave a high end FDE rig.

Nothing in nature is remotely black....well maybe a beetle.

Hmm, ok. Not sure what how they look under NV has anything to do with the visible color of the finish.

"Black" just means nonreflective of visible light. How much it reflects IR light (what NVDs pick up, and hence what determines "brightness" of objects in NV) is not really correlated with visible light reflectance. Has more to do with the nature of the finish, e.g., I'm sure there are black finishes that do not reflect IR either.

So the difference they see could be something related to anodized versus painted, not really black versus FDE.

My next one is gonna be FDE just to add some color to my collection. Probably not FDE receivers, but furniture and rail covers will be for sure.

If your goal is stealth and FDE really does show up less on NVD, I say definitely do it.

I've been at a standstill myself trying to decide if my SBR should be plain black or FDE. The look is starting to appeal a lot more to me. I live in the DC Metro area, though.

I used FDE furniture on my rifle I finished this week. I love the way it looks. All my others are plain old black. A little color never hurt nobody :)

I just started a FDE build.

it would be nice to have anodized receivers in FDE and then add furniture in FDE.

I got sick of all my FDE. I ended up using Rit Dye to change the color of all my FDE stuff to brown.

Just remember that nothing in nature is black, so even at night a black object will seem like a deeper shade of black than the surround objects that are, you guessed it, not black. Take a look at the modern trend in camouflage clothing: black is no longer in the pattern. MARPAT woodland was the most recent one to incorporate black in the pattern. Everything since then has kept it out of the mix.

So keep that in mind; because everything that seems black at night is not actually black.

Man I would really like to see this thread. My Google Fu is failing.

I've thought about trying to get a coyote brown I could duplicate on all the parts/mags

I can't find the thread either, but I did stumble across this photo. The contrast is more than I would have expected:
