I have a Colt match target with fixed carry handle and I want to put a scope on it.
Can the upper receiver be changed out for a Colt flat top receiver ?
How expensive would it be if it can be done ?

Uppers can be had for under $100.
With a barrel wrench and an receiver block you could do it yourself if you are mechanically inclined.
wrench
receiver block

Or you could get something like this for $20 and mount your scope right on the handle.

Does the lower have standard take down pins or is it a large hole colt? Also, if you have a colt gray lower your upper will be black and will not match...it that matters to you. Other than that you can swap out the upper no problem, just make sure you don't get an upper with M4 feed ramps if your barrel extension does not have them.

I am not sure about standard or large hole pins. It was built in 2009, can you tell from that if its standard or large holes ?

Would that be a Colt upper for under $100.00 ?

I heard something about parallax if you mount the scope on top of the carry handle, what actually is parallax ?

You rile is pretty new so I am sure it is a small (i.e. standard) pin lower. If you want a colt upper it will be $150+, not worth it in my opinion.

I think you mean sight over bore and not parallax. If you put a scope on a carry handle it puts the optic higher over the barrel so the point of impact will change more with range. You will also need something to get good cheek rest if you mount the optic that high.

Yes that is what I meant, thank you for your reply.
For a cheek rest I was thinking about looking for a Colt Delta cheek pad.
I would like to keep the rifle all Colt if possible for resale value if I ever decided to sell it. Would putting on a non Colt upper receiver knock down the value ?

If you are worried about re-sale value then switching out the upper to anything, even another Colt, will effect the value. How much and if this is in a positive or negative way will depend upon your buyer.

I have the exact same rifle and decided to build it up a Delta HBAR clone like this:

I have found the proper leather sling, a cheek piece like it but it doesn't say Colt on it, and the same scope mount without the Colt branding. I still need to find the scope and then I will be done with it. I did have the barrel threaded though as it just looked strange without the flashider.

where did you find the cheek piece ?
What has been the effect on point of aim and point of impact with the scope mounted on top of the carry handle ?

My feeling is you can always save the old components and re-assemble the rifle to spec if you want to sell it. The height of the scope on the carry handle is easy to overcome, just create a ballistics chart and tape it to the side of the stock. You can make one here which has a sight height variable:

How about just buying a second complete upper with a flat top receiver already on it?

I think Colt went to small hole uppers in the early 1990s. I can tell you my 1996 Colt is small hole. My dad's 1993 colt is small hole. His 1989 Colt is large hole. (again uppers, not trigger pins).

I would be cautious buying a Colt upper. Ask the colt forum. Most sources have shitty pictures, and make no mention of whether or not they have M4 feed ramps. You do NOT have M4 feed ramps.
